Spare Change
The campus coffee shop had a jar collecting donations to a fund for
“disadvantaged” students - kids whose scholarships left them struggling below
subsistence level.
Justin felt an obligation to donate his spare change; which kind of defeated the
purpose of buying their damned thrift store coffee in the first place.
“Why don’t you just get Starbucks?” Brian scoffed.
Justin never bothered with the "there but for …" speech - the painful
truth that most of those struggling kids were disowned, just like him.
But then he heard the fund had started receiving substantial anonymous
donations; and knew Brian had heard him anyway.
