A Night At Britin

Justin kept pacing back and forth watching the snow falling faster and hearing the wind gusts that shook the house.  He could kick himself for the anxious behavior he demonstrated just a few short hours ago.

“Kinnetik, how may I direct your call?”

“Hey, Cynthia, when did you get demoted to receptionist?”

“When almost no one came in to work today, anticipating the snowstorm that’s on the way.”

“Yea, I’ve been hearing about that storm on the news.  It’s supposed to be huge.  When are you heading home?”

“I’ll be leaving in about five minutes.  I was just shutting down my computer as you called.  By the way, it’s lovely chatting with you, but my guess is you called for Brian.”

“Your guess would be correct.”

“Hold on, I’ll get him for you.”

“Kinney.”

“Brian, I’m sure Cynthia told you it was me.”

“Hey, Sunshine, actually she didn’t.  I think she’s just pre-occupied with being a gold-brick, like the rest of my staff.”

“Brian, there’s a snowstorm on our doorstep that’s got the potential to close down everything.  Don’t you think you should be getting out yourself?”

“I have a few more things to look over and then I’ll be on my way.  Maybe thirty minutes or so.”

“Brian, please tell me you won’t try to get here if the snow has already begun falling vigorously.”

“Don’t worry.  I’ll be home long before anything even begins.”

“Just remember, tonight’s a special night.  I’ve prepared a wonderful meal for us to celebrate.”

“Sounds great, I won’t disappoint you, Justin.  I promise.”

That had been four hours ago.  Just two hours ago another phone call had trumped the previous one.

“Kinney.”

“Brian, I can’t believe you’re still there.  Have you looked out the window?”

“Sunshine, you know my office doesn’t have any windows. What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Brian, go out, into the main offices and look out the window.  We’re in the midst of a blizzard.  You’re stuck at Kinnetik.”

“No fucking way…oh shit, it’s a fucking white-out!”

“That’s what I’ve been telling you.  Look Brian, our plans can certainly wait until tomorrow, please stay at Kinnetik.  There’s no reason we can’t celebrate tomorrow night.”

“I’m sorry to ruin our night, Sunshine.  I’m going to try and get to the loft and I promise I’ll call you when I arrive.”

“Brian, please be careful.  I love you.”

“Me, too, Justin.”

Now it was two hours later and Justin hadn’t heard a word from Brian.  He didn’t answer the loft, Kinnetik or cell phone.

Justin could only bite his thumbnail and pace.  His fears for Brian’s safety continued to tear him apart inside.

Finally Justin curled up in front of the fire and rocked back and forth, almost praying for Brian’s safe arrival somewhere – anywhere.

Justin was so caught up in his fears that he was startled when Brian walked up behind him. “You started without me.  That fire looks terrific.  Can I join you?”

Justin grabbed Brian around the neck, “Oh god, Brian, I’ve been so worried.  What happened?”

“Tonight is the first weekend we have together at Britin since you returned from New York.  I couldn’t miss that.”

“But I didn’t hear the ‘vette pull into the garage.”

“It didn’t. I got an old friend from the leather bar, who plows the highways, to give me a ride home.  After all I can’t miss the biggest achievement of my life…getting you back for good.”

“I love you, Brian.”

The two sat together huddled in front of the fire celebrating time being on their side for once.
