Chapter 9

“How did you get me to agree to this insanity?”  Reid pinched the bridge of his nose and started pacing the length of the bedroom.

“I just thought it would be nice for both of us to catch up with Casey, you haven’t seen him in a while.”

“Not since the night he nearly puked on the floor at Yo’s.”

“Right.” Luke rolled his eyes.  “So I thought it was about time we all got together, find out how he’s been doing since he left Allison.”

“Please tell me he didn’t just hop on board the homo-express and move in with Jason.”

“No, he moved in with his parents for the time being, but I wouldn’t be surprised by anything we learn tonight.”

“But why do we have to feed them?  Can’t we just have them come by after dinner?”  Reid hated the thought of entertaining, especially with Ethan spending a few days at the farm, he and Luke had the entire house to themselves, a rare occurrence, one that would become rarer still when the twins arrived.

“Jason and Casey need a safe place to relax without a million prying eyes.”

“Here they just get four.”

Here, we don’t get angry at Casey for switching teams.  It seems he’s been facing a lot of disapproving looks, and verbal backlash, from many in the community.”

“Welcome to Oakdale, land of the free, home of the tolerant... but only if you play by their rules.”

“It’s mostly good, Reid, and you know it.  This is hard for people to take in, especially those who’ve known Casey all his life.”

“On top of all this Mark was whistling in the hallway today during his rounds.  It was driving me crazy.  He sounded like a canary!”

“That’s great!  I guess Noah really thought about our talk.”

“It just doesn’t seem right for a neurosurgeon to be so damn happy.”

Luke snorted.  “I didn’t realize being a grumpy asshole was a prerequisite for becoming a brilliant doctor.”

Tilting his head, Reid grinned.  “That’s only the prerequisite if you want to be the undeniable supreme--”

“Top?”  Luke raised an eyebrow.

“I was going to say top of the field, but maybe I am getting a little narrow-minded.  I wouldn’t want to limit myself.”  Reid grinned.

“Wow, you are evolving.”

He would never admit to it of course, but his ego took a hit when Luke came close to outdoing him in the smart comeback department, no matter how amusing that comeback might be.  Luckily he knew just the way to put an end to the conversation.  Reid grabbed Luke, pulled him into a tight embrace and crashed their lips together.

The kiss quickly turned from surprising and aggressive to urgent and heated. Giving into their hunger for one another, both men moaned into the kiss when Reid pressed his tongue past Luke’s open lips.  Some things never changed -- thankfully.  Reid loved knowing he could still turn Luke on with a touch and a kiss.

The two clung to one another.  When Reid started to unbutton his partner’s shirt, Luke stepped back grabbing his hands.  “We can’t.”  He was panting.  “Company’s coming soon.”

“Fuck!  I wish they were coming right now.  Then they wouldn’t be joining us and we could continue this far more productive evening activity.”

“I promise we’ll continue this later.”  Cupping Reid’s cheek, Luke pressed their lips together one more time.  After straightening his shirt, he brushed his fingers over Reid’s shoulder, smoothing his collar.  “You don’t play fair, Dr. Oliver-Snyder.”

“Neither do you, Mr. O-S.”

Glancing over Reid’s shoulder, Luke frowned.  “Damn!  They’ll be here soon and we’re not ready.”

“Who cares?  At least they know they’re welcome here, I’m sure that’s more important to them than us not being ready.”

“I just hope your new pediatrician doesn’t hurt Casey.”

“Well that goes double, and in reverse, for me.  The last thing I need is a depressed doctor in a pediatric unit.”

“I just want tonight to go as smoothly as the dinner with my family.”

“What’s the big deal?  Emma cooked great food.  Your sister’s rugrats ate almost as much as Ethan and me, my mother didn’t insult anyone, and not only took the kid away for a week, but arranged to have Lucinda and John visit to get her out of our hair for a couple of days so you could easily play hooky--”

“Oh, is that what they’re calling it now, hooky?”  Luke wore a grin from ear to ear.

“Remembering our aerobic recreation while the kid was in Boston, are you?”

“It’s not something I’ll soon forget, nor do I want to.”  Luke adjusted his pants.  “Damn.”

Reid chuckled.  “Glad the thought of it makes you hard again.”

“Stop it!  Casey and Jason will be here in less than twenty minutes!”

“Then I’d strongly suggest we do something about your little problem.”

Luke glared at Reid.  “We don’t have time.”

“I don’t know.  You can be pretty fast when you want to be.”  Reid knew he was being evil, but he loved watching Luke squirm.  It was part of what kept their sex life so hot.

“No!”  Luke swatted Reid’s arm harder than usual.

“Okay, okay.”  Reid took pity on Luke and gave them both another way out of their suddenly urgent problem.  “Remember Faith’s reaction when you announced we were having twins?”

Luke huffed.  “That’s right, she turned to Molly and offered her sympathy and a great product for stretch marks.”

“I’m a doctor and the thought of those made me a little sick.”

“At least you recovered when Grandma brought dessert to the table.”

“Ah, Emma; you can’t deny those pies and cookies were incredible.  That woman defies age.  By now her hands should be crippled with arthritis, instead she still bakes better than Julia Child when she was at the top of her game.”

“And aren’t you lucky she does.”

“It certainly made people stop hugging and kissing us.”

“You loved it, Reid.”

“Not when Natalie offered to drive the kids anywhere.  I’m still worried that Emma lets her behind the wheel when she takes Ethan to school and that’s less than two miles away.”

“Don’t worry; I’m not letting my baby sister drive the twins anywhere until she’s twenty-one.”

Reid snorted.  “Why do I doubt that?”

“I nearly killed Parker when he started adding up all the diapers and formula we’ll have to store for just for the first couple of months.”

“It’s amazing how much infants can take in and then spew at you from both ends.”

“Gross!”  Luke snickered.

“What’s so funny?”

“That last thought sealed the deal.  I’m definitely ready for our guests to arrive.”

“I guess I’ll just have to remind you where we left off after this ridiculous dinner.”

“I’d advise you to keep words like ridiculous, diapers, and spew out of the conversation if you want to get anywhere later.”

“I’ll be my best and most seductive self when our guests thoughtfully leave as soon as possible.”

Before Luke could respond, the doorbell rang.

“Do you want me to get that?”  Reid had to admit he was curious.  He was more than a little interested in seeing how Casey and Jason interacted.

“No, I don’t want you to scare them off.”  Luke passed Reid, walking quickly to the door.

As soon as he opened it, Reid watched Luke staring at Casey.  He was a bit disturbed at the intense look his husband was throwing bi-boy’s way.

Standard greetings were shared by all, as Luke continued to gawk.

Finally, Casey faced Luke and blurted out, “What is it?  What are you staring at?”

“Oh my God, Case, you two did it before you came over!”

Reid was glad he wasn’t drinking anything, he would have spit it all over.  Taking a second look at their guests, Reid snorted.  Luke was right.  They were both wearing that freshly fucked look.

Jason was the first to break the awkward silence.  “Casey, you didn’t tell me your best friend was clairvoyant.”

“He’s not psychic.”  Reid patted Jason’s arm.  “He’s just not blind, and neither am I.”  Turning toward Casey, Reid continued.  “By the way, young Mr. Hughes, how does it feel to have come over to the dark side -- pun intended.”

“Reid!”

“Hey, Luke, we might as well get all this out of the way before dinner.  I want to enjoy my meal!”

“It’s okay, Luke.”  Casey laced his fingers with Jason’s.  “At least he wants to hear the details because he’s on our side.  There aren’t too many others around who can say the same.”

“You’ve got me on your side, Case.”  Luke looked from Casey to Jason.  “And from what I can see, this is the best start to a relationship you’ve ever had.”

Casey’s cheeks reddened.  “I think so.”

Jason lifted their clasped hands and kissed Casey’s.  “I hope so.”

“Luke!”

“Yes, Reid.”  Luke sighed.

“Can we get dinner on the table?  There’s too much sugar in this room.  I’m heading for a diabetic coma.”

Luke huffed.  “Yes, dear.  Don’t forget my romantic interests will either build or diminish throughout the evening.”

Reid raised an eyebrow and nodded.  “Casey, Jason, so glad you could both be here.  Care for a drink?”  If good behavior got him the night he hoped for, Reid would be happy to play that game.  Besides, he wouldn’t admit it out loud, but Casey did look happier, and more content, than Reid ever remembered seeing him in all his years in Oakdale.
