Improvisation
It was early December and a lightly falling snow outside seemed to portend the
approaching holiday season. It was a time of year when the spirit inside the
loft also displayed a holiday warmth – usually it did, that is. Brian and Justin
were having breakfast and Justin was saying:
“This is gonna be the worst Christmas ever, Brian, Nothing can save it. The
worst ever ….”
“It’s not that bad at all, Sunshine,” Brian told him. “It will work out. You’ll
see ….”
“Well I don’t see why ‘Aunt’ Gladys has to come here from New York and ruin
everything,” Justin complained, “Not that she’s anybody’s real aunt either ….”
“Well she’s Melanie’s cousin and she’s very good to Gus – he likes her a lot -
that’s why he calls her Aunt Gladys,” Brian reminded him. “And it’s like – her
fortieth birthday – and she wants to celebrate with her family – and Melanie and
Gus are her only family and ….”
“And so she has to ruin our Christmas,” Justin maintained. “Why did she have to
be born right on Christmas day anyhow? I had like – everything already planned.
Christmas is a busy day for us ….”
“Yeah, it was bad planning on Gladys’ part but it’s only going to be a little
party from two o’clock till about four,” Brian reasoned. “We can switch a few
things around somehow to get everything done ….”
”Like you’re such a great scheduler, Brian Kinney,” Justin replied. “Like the
whole problem won’t end up in my lap ….”
“Of course it will, Sweetheart,” Brian laughed. “You are the best scheduler in
the whole world. I’ll just get out of the way and you’ll work some kind of magic
– and everything will work out beautifully - and we’ll be saying afterward that
it was a great Christmas – maybe the best Christmas ever – and we’ll have a good
time at Gladys’ party too ….”
“You think?” Justin thought out loud. “You have that much confidence in me?”
“Yep,” Brian affirmed. “I know you can do it and even if it doesn’t work out as
well as we hoped ….”
“Gee whiz, Bri,” Justin interrupted. “There’s no chance of it not working out.
How could you say that? I’ve already got some ideas. We’ll just improvise. I
know how to improvise ….”
“You certainly do, Baby,” Brian assured him. “You’re the best improviser I know
….”
“You know what, Kinney,” Justin told him. “Sometimes you’re pretty good at
improvising too ….”
“I try,” Brian smiled across the table. “I do try.”
