S is for Sunshine

Brian paced in front of the windows and cursed himself. Everywhere he looked these days he swore he saw Justin. Just last night at Babylon he’d rushed over to a young blond at the bar and made a fool of himself.

It had been seven months since he’d last seen him. After the wedding that didn’t happen, Justin had moved to New York to work on his art and immerse himself in the world he thrived in. At first they made a point to talk on the phone every night and visit at least twice a month. Then Kinnetic got some major accounts and Justin traveled to Paris to study with some famous artist and time started to slip away from them.

Brian hated that he’d let this happen, that he’d focused more on work than on his relationship. He stared at the pink slip of paper that Cynthia had left on his desk earlier that day and cursed himself again for not being there to answer Justin’s call.

He’d tried his cell multiple times over the last few hours and got Justin’s voicemail every single time. After work he’d stopped at Babylon then the diner for his usual turkey on rye Tuesday dinner then raced home. He ignored calls from Teddy, Emmett and Michael, intent on only answering for Justin.

Another hour went by. Another hour spent wondering what could have been had he just begged his partner to stay. He’d sacrificed his own happiness so that Justin could have the life he deserved. He’d tried to carry on like nothing had ever happened but soon the life got to be too monotonous and his trips to Babylon became more about business than getting his dick sucked in the back room.

Everyone had grown up and moved on except him. Debbie and Horvath were still going strong, as were Michael and Ben. They’d recently become grandparents after Hunter and his wife had had twins.

Emmett and Drew were once again the hottest couple in sports while Ted and Blake enjoyed being married legally. Hell, even Jennifer had married that twink she’d been hooking up with. And here he was, all alone on a Tuesday night, staring out the window like some lovesick kid wishing his life away.

He should just get on a plane and go to wherever Justin was and tell him that he loved him and that they could find a way to make this work. He started for the door more than once only to stop himself each time.

“He is happy, Brian. Don’t you dare fuck it up for him.” He had told himself this over and over the last few months. Hell, he’d even called the munchers for advice but chickened out and asked about Gus and when he could see him this summer.

Shaking his head at his own stupidity he stripped as he headed for the shower. Maybe a hot shower and jerking off would help his mood. Forty minutes later he emerged from the steam filled bathroom wrapped in a towel. The ringing phone caught his attention and he ran to answer it. Seeing Justin’s name on the screen made him smile but he kept his excitement to himself.

“Hey,” was all he said as he answered.

“I miss you, Brian.”

“You miss my cock.”

“That too. Do you miss me? At all? Even a little bit?”

Justin was fishing for something and try as he might, Brian wasn’t able to resist.

“Yes,” he breathed into the phone. “I miss you, Sunshine. God fucking damnit, I miss you.”

“Open the door, Brian.”

Stunned, the older man stood still for a few minutes until Justin repeated the request. Hurrying to the door, he pulled it back to find the only smile that ever brightened his word standing on the other side.

“Honey, I’m home,” Justin said laughing as Brian pulled him into an embrace that spoke more than any words ever could. He silenced his partner with a kiss that rivaled those in every old black and white movie that Brian had ever made them watch.

Justin took his lover’s hand and led him back inside, closing the door behind them. Brian’s Sunshine was back, in more ways than one and he didn’t plan on letting him go ever again.
